“May the Force Be with You”

Role Reversal: Finding Faith, Inner Peace, and Strength as a Family Caregiver

“May the Force Be With You.”A simple phrase, yet a powerful reminder that faith, strength, and hope can carry us through life’s hardest times. The almighty force awakens us through faith and the belief that God is by your side with every step and every breath you take. The world can be harsh, people can be cruel, and situations and relationships can play havoc on your inner being.

I find this to be true in my life at present. My story is not unique; I believe many adult children find themselves in the role I now face.

Having elderly parents with health conditions and diseases requires a different approach to navigating relationships between mother, father, son, and daughter.

The role slowly shifts from child to caregiver. The process is gradual. The signs quietly begin to appear in the little moments of daily life. Personality begins to change. Anger and fear take over conversations.

The parent you once viewed as strong and independent slowly becomes someone needing care and support. Witnessing this change is heart-pounding.

How does one carry on?

Restore your faith and your spiritual relationship with your Savior. God is merciful. His love endures forever, and His strength embraces us, carrying us through the darkest moments. He sustains within us the courage, mindset, and hope to not only endure, but to believe that blessings will once again be showered upon us.

“Even during life’s storms, faith becomes the force that carries us forth.”

Inhale

Don’t forget to breathe.

When your heart begins to race and your mind begins to wander, pause. Stay calm through breathing exercises, prayer, and meditation. Close your eyes and picture your favorite place. Think about a place that brings you peace and appeals to your senses.

What brings you joy?

For me, the sights and sounds of the ocean calm my spirit and refresh my soul. Salt, sand, and surf instantly renew my inner being with their healing power. Allowing peace to settle into your spirit like the natural lullaby of the ocean waves is where healing begins. It takes time to channel negative thoughts and anxiety through prayer and meditation. With practice, it becomes easier and transforms into a valuable life tool.

Remember, you are in control.

You have a choice in how you respond.

You are worthy.
You will achieve.
You are beautiful.
You will succeed.
You are special.
You will overcome.
You are blessed.
Inhale 1-2-3
Exhale 1-2-3

You hold the power.

Just remember to breathe…

“Peace within begins with a single breath.”

Take Action

Faith gives us strength to endure, but growth begins when we take action.

Ponder those things, events, people, or situations that steal your peace, fill your heart with negativity, and drown your soul in sorrow. Do not go down the rabbit hole of self-pity or destruction.

You are stronger than you realize.

You have the almighty force of spiritual faith guiding your path. Take action toward healing, restoring, and repairing the pieces of your heart that have been broken. Reach out to support groups, trusted friends, family members, or professional experts who can help guide you and create a plan for healing.

For me, I reflect on my new role as caregiver to an aging parent who is emotionally abusive and shatters my heart with anger and words that sting deeply. My first instinct is to retreat into my shell, to hide, and to take the hurt personally.

The mind begins replaying the words over and over again…

I am not worthy.

I am wrong.

I am not good enough.

I am a disappointment.

I am scarred.

I am tainted.

But those thoughts do not define your worth.

They are wounds speaking—not the truth.

Change your thinking.

Change your mindset.

Take action to change your course.

"Healing begins the moment we believe we are worthy of peace and deserving of all the good fortunes that come our way."

Thoughts to Ponder

Life places unexpected roles and responsibilities upon us. Some seasons test our patience, our hearts, and even our faith. But remember this: You are not alone.

Breathe deeply.

Inhale—Exhale.

Lean into your faith.

Take action toward healing.

Trust that the force within you is stronger than the battles around you.

One step at a time.

One prayer at a time.

One breath at a time.

You will prevail.
You’ve got this!

Faboozey On!
